Bachelor of Science - Game Design

Whether in creepy escape rooms, colorful jump-'n'-runs or the infinite expanses of open-world games – you know games inside out! You've always wanted to invent your own games, design fascinating worlds and implement your ideas technically? Here you learn game development from idea to playable game! Our game designers are in demand not only in the gaming industry, but also in agencies, tech companies, industry or education – wherever technology and humans are brought together playfully. Concept: Conceptually, you deal with the design, organization and planning of game projects, creating user-friendly interfaces and intuitive game controls; background stories and entertaining in-game dialogues; exciting levels and challenging tasks. Art: In the artistic area of the program, you deal with the visual design of games. This includes: development of characters and game worlds as a concept artist; 3D modeling and how your assets are integrated into a game engine; animation and how characters and game worlds are brought to life. Technology: The technical area covers programming and computer science. Here you learn: writing software design patterns and readable code; graphics programming and programming your own shaders and post-FX; relevant methods for implementing artificial intelligence in games. Game design is far more than video game development – it's about making complex systems intuitively usable and enabling users not only a functional but also a motivating and entertaining interaction. This exact skill makes graduates of the Game Design program sought after in many industries! Gamification: More than just a gimmick. Gamification – the application of playful elements in non-playful contexts – today finds wide application in areas such as education, health, enterprise software or customer retention. Versatile career paths thanks to broad skill sets. The skills learned in the Game Design program go far beyond the gaming industry. Graduates are sought-after experts for: UX/UI design, marketing & branding, product and service design, software development. Through these interdisciplinary competencies, game designers are in demand not only in the gaming industry, but also in agencies, tech companies, industry or education – wherever technology and humans are brought together playfully. Besides internationally known game studios like Yager or Ubisoft Blue Byte, you'll find our alumni at SAP, Siemens, Bosch and BMW. Some simply start their own business with their skills: successful German game studios like Chimera Entertainment (Sacred Legends, Angry Birds Evolution) or Mimimi Games (Shadow Tactics, Desperados III) were founded directly after graduation by alumni of Mediadesign Hochschule.

Admission requirements: General university entrance qualification (Abitur), Fachhochschulreife or a recognized equivalent qualification. Without Abitur, studying is possible according to § 11 BerlHG via subject-specific university entrance qualification. Personal requirements: You should have a pronounced logical way of thinking; enjoy teamwork and show great helpfulness; have gained first experiences with the medium of computer games. We require from you: A motivation letter (approx. 1 page); Work samples showing engagement with the medium of computer games; Relevant certificates (Abitur certificate can be submitted later); A CV with photo. Application is possible during the current school year (even before Abitur).
