Visa Types for Ausbildung
National Visa (D-Visa)
The initial visa you'll apply for at the German embassy or consulate in your home country. This allows entry to Germany to begin your Ausbildung.
- Valid for 90 days initially
- Requires Ausbildung contract from a German employer
- Must be obtained before entering Germany
Residence Permit
Once in Germany, you'll convert your National Visa into a Residence Permit for the duration of your Ausbildung program.
- Valid for the duration of your Ausbildung (2-3.5 years)
- Applied for at the local Foreigners' Office (Ausländerbehörde)
- Includes work authorization for your training position
Visa Application Process
The process of obtaining a visa for your Ausbildung in Germany involves several key steps:
Secure an Ausbildung Position
Before applying for a visa, you must have a signed training contract (Ausbildungsvertrag) from a German employer. GoAusbildung helps with finding suitable positions and preparing applications.
Gather Required Documents
Prepare all necessary documents, including your training contract, language certificate, educational credentials, financial proof, and passport. All non-English/German documents must be translated.
Book Visa Appointment
Schedule an appointment at the German Embassy or Consulate in your region. Appointments should be booked 2-3 months before your planned departure to Germany.
Attend Visa Interview
Present your documents and answer questions about your Ausbildung plans. Be prepared to demonstrate your genuine interest in the vocational training and your plans for after completion.
Visa Processing & Approval
Processing times vary but typically take 4-8 weeks. Once approved, you'll receive your visa sticker in your passport, valid for entry to Germany.
Register in Germany & Convert to Residence Permit
Upon arrival, register your address (Anmeldung) and apply for your residence permit at the local Foreigners' Office (Ausländerbehörde) within 90 days.

Personal Documents
- Valid passport (with at least 1 year validity)
- Completed visa application form
- 3 biometric passport photos (35x45mm)
- Cover letter explaining your purpose and plans
Ausbildung & Education
- Signed Ausbildung contract (Ausbildungsvertrag)
- German language certificate (minimum B1 level)
- Educational certificates with translations
- CV/resume in German format
Financial Documents
- Proof of blocked account (Sperrkonto) with €11,904 (only if your Ausbildung stipend is less than €992/month)
- Proof of visa application fee payment (approximately €75)
- Proof of travel health insurance for initial period
Additional Documents
- Proof of accommodation in Germany (if available)
- Previous visa refusals documentation (if applicable)
- Declaration of authenticity for submitted documents
Post-Arrival Immigration Process
After arriving in Germany, you'll need to complete several immigration steps to legally settle and begin your Ausbildung:
Address Registration (Anmeldung)
Within 2 weeks of arrival, register your address at the local Residents' Registration Office (Einwohnermeldeamt). You'll need your passport, visa, and a landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung).
Residence Permit Application
Within 90 days, visit the local Foreigners' Office (Ausländerbehörde) to convert your visa into a residence permit. Bring your passport, visa, address registration, Ausbildung contract, biometric photos, and proof of health insurance.
Health Insurance Registration
Register with a German health insurance provider (Krankenkasse). As an Ausbildung trainee, you'll be eligible for the public health insurance system, with contributions partially covered by your employer.
Tax ID (Steueridentifikationsnummer)
You'll automatically receive a tax ID by mail after registering your address. This is required for your employer to process your salary payments correctly.
