About this Apprenticeship

  • We are Deutsche Bahn. Millions of passengers travel with us every day and we transport enormous quantities of goods – nationwide and in neighbouring Europe. Too often we disappoint. That's why we are working flat out for a better railway. For that we need power and you! We are one of Germany's most diverse employers. Every year we look for around 5,000 apprentices in 50 different apprenticeship occupations who want to make the railway a little better every day together with us. Join us: We offer you attractive benefits, a fixed contact person and a great team at your side. And after successful training you have the best chances of being taken on! Train traffic control is an indispensable part of rail transport. Here you ensure that our passengers reach their destination safely and on time. From 01.09.2027 we are looking for you for the 2.5-year apprenticeship as a railway worker in train traffic control (f/m/d) for DB InfraGO AG at the Bielefeld location. The vocational school is located in Hagen. With the training you become the coordinator of our trains. You don't sit in the train, but in a control centre (called "signal box"). We have countless ones all over Germany. Via screens or panels you can observe the trains in your area and via buttons, keys and levers you can also influence the train journeys. Because at the push of a button you can set signals (traffic lights for trains) to green or red and also switch points so that trains can change tracks. Many other tasks make you the most important team member for the train drivers. You are in constant contact and exchange information, e.g. about changes during the journey. With your small team you work in the greater Bielefeld area on a signal box close to the action. Here you see the trains passing by. The control of the trains is mostly done via levers, push buttons or rotary switches.
  • Your colleagues show you step by step how to operate the technology in a signal box correctly
  • You learn when to press the right keys and buttons to switch signals (traffic lights) or points (track change transitions)
  • You are often in contact with the other employees in train traffic control and in the control centres as well as the train drivers
  • You are an important part of our team and enable our passengers to have a safe and punctual journey with our trains

What You'll Learn

Colleagues show step-by-step operation of signal box technology. Learn when to press the right keys and buttons to switch signals or points. Contact with employees in train traffic control, control centres and train drivers. Important team member for safe and punctual passenger journeys.

Requirements

You have (soon) successfully completed school and your school qualification is recognised in Germany. Your German skills correspond to at least B2 level. Even in demanding situations you keep calm and maintain an overview. You like to take responsibility and work with concentration. Teamwork and reliability characterise you. You are willing to work in shifts. As part of the selection process for this apprenticeship you will undergo an aptitude test.

What Deutsche Bahn AG offers

For the success of your training we provide the best conditions: You receive a mobile device from us that you can use for learning and privately. We offer you 16 free journeys within Germany per year and further travel concessions such as the DB Job Ticket for your daily commute. In addition there are discounted travel options for family and friends. We support you in settling into your new city! If you have to commute more than 2.5 hours daily from your previous place of residence and rent a closer apartment, you receive a rent subsidy of up to €400 per month from us. Equal opportunities and self-determined participation of severely disabled and equal persons as well as respectful cooperation are firmly anchored principles within the DB Group. Therefore severely disabled and equal applicants are given preferential consideration in case of equal suitability.
