If you are planning an Ausbildung, it helps to know where the growth is. This guide covers the genuinely emerging fields for 2026, with an honest account of what they pay and how the training works.
One thing to clear up first: you will see headlines promising "4,000 euro starting salaries" for trainees. That is not how Ausbildung pay works. We explain the real numbers below and cite them.
How trainee pay actually works
Every recognised Ausbildung pays a statutory minimum first-year training allowance, the Mindestausbildungsvergütung, of roughly 724 euros per month in 2026. Many sectors pay above this, and pay rises across the training years, but trainees are not earning four-figure entry salaries across the board.
The higher numbers you see usually describe pay after you qualify, in a specific field, and even then they vary widely by employer and region. There is no flat "4,000 euros to start" for an apprentice. Anyone presenting one is not describing the German system.
The fields with real momentum
These are areas where demand is genuinely growing in 2026.
IT and digital roles
Germany has tens of thousands of unfilled IT specialist positions, according to the industry association Bitkom. The recognised route is the Fachinformatiker, with specialisms including system integration, application development, and data and process analysis. Note that there is no standalone "Data Science Ausbildung" in the official BIBB register, and roles marketed as "AI technician" are usually specialisms within existing IT training rather than separate Ausbildungen. After qualifying, IT pay often starts somewhere around 2,800 to 3,500 euros per month, with wide variation.
Cybersecurity within IT
Security is one of the fastest-growing slices of the IT shortage. It is typically pursued through the Fachinformatiker route with a security focus or an IT-Sicherheit specialisation rather than a single named "cybersecurity Ausbildung."
Healthcare and care technology
Beyond frontline nursing, medical technology and care support roles are expanding as the population ages. Nursing training itself pays among the highest trainee allowances, roughly 1,290 to 1,447 euros per month under the public-sector TVAöD nursing tariff from April 2025.
Renewable energy and green trades
The energy transition is driving demand for electricians, installers and technicians who can build and maintain solar, heat-pump and grid infrastructure. These are skilled-trade routes with durable, policy-backed demand.
Commercial, logistics and e-commerce
As trade and online retail keep growing, commercial and logistics Ausbildungen remain steady, versatile options that apply across many industries.
How to read an "emerging field"
A field being new or fashionable does not make it a good bet. Ask:

Is there an actual recognised Ausbildung for it, or is it a marketing label on an existing one?

Does the day-to-day work suit you?

Can you reach the German level it requires, usually B1 and sometimes B2?
The strongest choices combine real demand, a recognised qualification and genuine fit.
After you qualify
You can apply for an 18-month residence permit to find qualification-related work (Section 20 AufenthG).
After about two years of qualified employment, you can apply for a settlement permit (Section 18c AufenthG).
Citizenship is possible after five years of residence under the 2024 reform.
