Apprenticeship as Animal Caretaker in Clinic and Research

A good hand with animals and a responsible approach to them are important strengths for this profession. The training takes place mainly in the Charité's research facilities for experimental medicine and in external institutions. Mainly laboratory animals are bred and cared for here, following hygiene rules.

• You observe, breed and care for many kinds of animals - from small rodents and fish to sheep or pigs
• You learn to prepare feed rations and feed mixtures
• You look after the animals by feeding them and cleaning and disinfecting their cages and stables
• You learn how important hygiene is when handling animals
• You prepare animals for treatments such as surgery, e.g. by taking blood
• You support animal testing for medical purposes and learn proper pre- and aftercare of the animals
• You gain insight into laboratory work and contribute to research
• You document processes, e.g. by creating animal records

• You have at least a intermediate school leaving certificate or a comparable one
• You have good grades in German and natural sciences
• You are skilled in handling animals
• You are interested in laboratory work
• You communicate openly and like working in a team
• You are reliable, careful and can concentrate well on details
• You have a sense of responsibility and are committed
• You have very good German skills with flawless pronunciation and good language expression
• For non-native speakers: proof of C1 level
