DHBW Degree Program Chemical Engineering

DSM Grenzach is the competence center within the global group for the production of water-soluble vitamins B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin) and B6 (pyridoxine), as well as the fat-soluble vitamin D3. In addition, ASCP (the fat-soluble form of vitamin C), PUFAs and intermediates for carotenoids are produced in Grenzach. The site employs 700 staff. The degree program at DHBW Mannheim uniquely combines a scientific university education with entrepreneurial practice: on a three-month rotation, students alternate between university and partner company, acquiring sound theoretical knowledge, practical professional experience and important soft skills. In October, the new Chemical Engineering degree program starts at DHBW Mannheim. It serves as a link between apparatus-oriented process engineering and chemistry or biology. The program is a standard 6-semester course with the process-oriented specialization Chemical and Bioengineering (CBIW) and the laboratory-chemistry-oriented specialization Technical and Applied Chemistry (TAC). Upon successful completion, the academic degree Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) is awarded. During the program, students gain in-depth knowledge of processes in the plants of the material-converting industry and in laboratory operations. This enables graduates to transfer the findings of chemists and biologists from the laboratory to pilot and production plants. Graduates also provide process and mechanical engineers with key parameters for the mechanical design of equipment and machinery. Thus, graduates are capable of interdisciplinary work, can independently plan and conduct experiments and projects, and develop new solutions with customers. They can also transfer new findings from engineering and natural sciences into industrial and commercial production, taking into account safety, ecological and economic requirements.
