Master's Thesis - Investigating the Use of AI for Porting Software Technologies

For its development division at the Ulm site, HENSOLDT is looking for a dedicated student (w/m/d) for a master's thesis in close cooperation with the University of Ulm. The thesis investigates how Large Language Models (LLMs) and AI-assisted code generation can be used to automatically transfer existing software systems (e.g. Java frontend > web frontend) to new architectures. The goal is a scientifically sound process model whose practical value is assessed using code examples.

• Research and analysis of existing AI-assisted tools and methods for software porting
• Investigation of the porting scenario Java frontend → web frontend
• Comparison of different approaches
• Analysis of typical challenges such as dependencies and framework differences, architecture differences, UI concepts and state management
• Development of a structured process model for AI-assisted software porting
• Carrying out prototype ports using abstracted or anonymized code examples
• Evaluation of the results in terms of code quality, maintainability, effort, degree of automation and need for rework
