About this Apprenticeship
At the Koenig & Bauer AG site in Würzburg, we are looking for a Robotics Systems Architect for our Factory & Machine Automation department. Printed packaging, banknotes, books... Koenig & Bauer is in all of them. The printing press manufacturer has been an innovator for over 200 years and, as a globally operating company with the industry's broadest product portfolio, is a technology and market leader in many areas. 5,500 employees around the globe generated annual revenue of around 1.3 billion euros for Koenig & Bauer in fiscal year 2025. From strategic planning through creative processes to precise craftsmanship – here you have the opportunity to realize innovative and sustainable solutions for the future of printing and packaging in a wide variety of professions.
What You'll Learn
- Design of standardized abstraction layers (Hardware Abstraction Layer - HAL) and co-development in strategic technology partnerships for manufacturer-independent control of complex kinematics and integration of open robotics ecosystems and motion apps
- Technological design and integration of complex end effectors (mechanical, pneumatic, electrical, vacuum, special tools) and integration of advanced sensors (force-torque sensors, tactile/optical 2D/3D systems, IO-Link) for intelligent gripping, joining and assembly processes
- Programming of dynamic robot paths including TCP calibration, contribution to cell layout and overall concepts, implementation of peripheral interfaces to main PLC, fieldbuses and modern IT/IoT interfaces (OPC UA, MQTT, EtherCat, Profinet)
- Implementation of comprehensive robot safety concepts (safe zones, power limitation, grip force retention), virtual validation in digital twin, real commissioning and cycle time optimizations on site at customer
Requirements
- Completed degree (Mechatronics, Automation Technology, Electrical Engineering) or technician training with strong robotics focus
- Several years of practice in special machinery construction with focus on complex, variable handling processes
- Experience in HAL/API design for decoupling kinematics and control logic
- Proficient handling of industrial robots and cobots (especially Yaskawa incl. Motoman Next, RobCo, FANUC, KUKA, Universal Robots)
- Strong expertise with gripper systems from renowned manufacturers and deep understanding of mechanical-physical relationships
- Knowledge of classic tools and PLC controls (MotoSim, RoboGuide, TIA Portal, Beckhoff)
- Ideally expertise in modern IT and robotics standards (ROS/ROS2, Python, C++, Docker, REST APIs)
- Sound knowledge of relevant safety standards (DIN EN ISO 10218, ISO/TS 15066)
- Analytical debugging at the interface of mechanics, IT and code
- Good English skills for confident mediation between internal disciplines, customers and strategic partners
What Koenig & Bauer offers
