About this Apprenticeship
The profession of paramedic offers an exciting and varied field of activity requiring personal responsibility, decision-making ability and reflective capacity. Paramedics are usually the first professional specialists at the scene of an emergency. They must quickly assess the situation, perform life-saving and extended measures, advise and communicate appropriately to the target group, work in a team and initiate further care. The aim of the vocational training is to improve the initial assessment of emergency situations and to carry out necessary emergency therapies at an early stage in order to reduce or avert serious health damage. Thus, paramedics learn a wide range of emergency medical first measures as well as procedures for initial examination and differential diagnosis. A further focus is the promotion of social competence in order to be able to act professionally on an interpersonal level in emergency situations. To prepare them for these complex tasks, trainees at skbs undergo not only school-based but also clinical training in order to acquire a broad spectrum of skills, which is completed by the important training at the rescue station.
What You'll Learn
You spend 1,920 hours at the rescue/paramedic school. There you learn to: recognise, assess and evaluate emergency situations in people of all age groups and hazardous situations; select, implement and evaluate rescue service measures and hazard prevention measures; independently perform invasive, medicinal and therapeutic measures; communicate and interact with and advise help-seeking and needy people taking into account their respective age as well as sociological and psychological aspects; see also §4 NotSanG. You spend 1,960 practical hours at one of the cooperating training rescue stations. This includes: application of all content and measures learned at school in real emergency situations; execution and organisation of missions in emergency rescue; ensuring the operational readiness of rescue equipment. You spend a further 720 hours during your training at skbs. There you have the opportunity to get to know the following departments: general nursing ward; interdisciplinary emergency department; anaesthesia and operating theatre department; intensive care unit; obstetrics, paediatric or paediatric surgery department/intensive care unit or ward with corresponding patients; psychiatric, gerontopsychiatric or gerontological department.
Requirements
At the start of training, you must have a secondary school leaving certificate (Sekundarabschluss I) or alternatively a lower secondary school leaving certificate (Hauptschulabschluss) and a successfully completed vocational training of at least two years. Medical fitness for the profession is determined by the Institute for Occupational Medicine and Occupational Safety.
