Avionics Software Architect

Rheinmetall Technical Publications GmbH in Penzberg is looking for a full-time avionics software architect (fixed-term contract) to develop and maintain the software architecture of avionics systems, taking safety, real-time and certification requirements into account.

• Develop and maintain the software architecture for avionics systems, taking safety, real-time and certification requirements into account
• Analyze system requirements and derive software requirements and technical solution approaches
• Define software components, interfaces, data flows and communication mechanisms
• Create architecture models, design descriptions and technical documentation
• Develop prototypes and reference implementations to validate architecture decisions
• Actively implement complex software components and critical core functions
• Set and enforce software development standards, coding guidelines and best practices
• Support the integration of hardware, firmware and software components and develop strategies for fault tolerance, redundancy, robustness and cybersecurity
• Conduct architecture and code reviews, analyze complex technical problems and optimize performance and resource use
• Support verification, validation and test concepts, ensure compliance with relevant aviation standards and certification requirements, and work closely with systems engineers, hardware developers, test engineers and safety and certification teams

• Completed degree in computer science, aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, software engineering or a comparable technical field
• Several years of professional experience developing safety-critical embedded or avionics software
• Sound knowledge of modern software architecture methods and design principles
• Very good programming skills in C/C++, ideally complemented by knowledge of Ada, Rust or Python, and proven hands-on experience implementing complex software solutions with a strong hands-on mentality
• Experience with real-time operating systems (RTOS) and embedded Linux platforms
• Good knowledge of software development processes following the V-model or comparable development models
• Experience with model-based development and architecture modeling, e.g. with UML or SysML
• Knowledge of avionics communication standards and protocols, e.g. RS-232, RS-422, ARINC 429, ARINC 664/AFDX, CAN or Ethernet
• Solid understanding of software quality assurance, verification, validation and test automation, plus experience with version control, build systems and CI/CD environments
