RWTH Aachen trains process technologists (Verfahrenstechnologinnen und -technologen Metall) in the specialization of iron and steel metallurgy or non-ferrous metallurgy. The content of the vocational training (Ausbildung) depends entirely on the specialization chosen by the trainees.

Specialization: Iron and Steel Metallurgy Process technologists (Verfahrenstechnologinnen und -technologen Metall) specializing in iron and steel metallurgy are specialists in the production of pig iron and steel. They primarily work in blast furnace and steel plants that produce pig iron, steel and ferroalloys, as well as pipes or bright steel. Furthermore, they are active in foundries. Some process technologists (Verfahrenstechnologinnen und -technologen Metall) process iron or steel in recycling plants.

Specialization: Non-ferrous Metallurgy Process technologists (Verfahrenstechnologinnen und -technologen Metall) specializing in non-ferrous metallurgy melt or refine non-ferrous metals. They mainly work in smelters that produce, for example, aluminum, lead, zinc, or nickel, or in foundries. Furthermore, they are employed in recycling plants. They can also work for manufacturers of tools or parts for automobiles and their engines.
