- Swimming badge at least Bronze As a sewer builder, you ensure that everything in Dortmund stays flowing. Your training takes place in the city drainage department of the city of Dortmund. There you will get to know various areas of city drainage, work hands-on, and experience how important your job is for a functioning city. Additionally, you participate in inter-company training (construction yard in Bochum or Hamm) and further expand your expertise. The training as a sewer builder is a dual training, meaning it takes place in the training company and at vocational school. Additionally, inter-company courses take place at the construction yard in Bochum or Hamm. As a sewer builder, you build wastewater systems and pipes from small house connections to large wastewater collectors. You search for leaky spots caused by material wear or roots. If old sewers have become brittle and leaky, you carry out the sealing. You also contribute to securing groundwater quality by cleaning pipes and shafts. Based on plans, sewer builders determine pipe routes and lay pipes made of concrete, stoneware, plastic, and metal underground. Sewer plans on tablets help you navigate the wastewater system. To carry out the work, you dig excavation pits and trenches and secure them with suitable shoring material. You are also responsible for construction site safety and marking the work area. Finally, you restore the road surface or paving. For many tasks, special equipment can be used, such as surveying instruments, pneumatic hammers, special equipment for excavation and compaction, and pumps to keep the construction area free of water. Theoretical instruction takes place in block form at Berufskolleg-Ost in Essen. In addition to job-related topics such as building materials and construction technology, technical communication, and business and economics, general education subjects such as German, politics/social studies, religion, and sports are taught.
