Apprenticeship as Operating Theatre Assistant (OTA)

The training to become an Operating Theatre Assistant (OTA) lasts three years. For theoretical and practical instruction, our trainees attend our LERN.PUNKT directly on the campus of ALB FILS KLINIKUM. You complete your practical assignments at ALB FILS KLINIKUM and apply the acquired knowledge directly. The vocational training follows the dual model, meaning theory and practice phases alternate. The dual model works seamlessly without commuting, as the new vocational school for Operating Theatre Assistance is located directly on the hospital campus. The training begins with a multi-week introductory block where trainees learn everything needed for their first practical assignment in the OR. Theoretical instruction covers fundamental knowledge in anatomy, medicine, and hygiene as well as legal and institutional frameworks in healthcare. Practical training practices, for example, how a patient is properly prepared for surgery or when and which instruments to hand to the surgeon. During practical block weeks at ALB FILS KLINIKUM in Göppingen, you explore various specialties and deployment areas. Besides the OR, assignments include a surgical outpatient clinic, central sterilization, endoscopy, and a multi-week nursing internship. An experienced practice supervisor is always at your side. For practical training, ALB FILS KLINIKUM offers a very broad spectrum with departments including general and visceral surgery, vascular surgery, plastic surgery, orthopedics with endoprosthetics, sports orthopedics, foot and ankle, spine center, trauma surgery, gynecology and obstetrics, urology, and pediatric surgery. At the end of the three-year training, a final examination with written, oral, and practical parts awaits.

The profession requires Abitur, intermediate school leaving certificate (Mittlere Reife), or equivalent completed schooling. However, with a lower secondary school leaving certificate (Hauptschulabschluss) your chances are good, provided you have completed at least a two-year vocational training or the one-year training as a healthcare assistant. By the start of training, you should have completed your 17th year of life. Important character traits: care, sense of responsibility and danger awareness, concentration ability, and flexibility. Your medical fitness certificate can be submitted after a successful application (proof by medical certificate). No entry in the certificate of good conduct may exist.
