Work-Study Program in Railway Engineering with Apprenticeship 2027

You combine a work-study program in railway engineering with an apprenticeship as a train traffic controller. Theory and practical phases alternate, and you help expand railway infrastructure.

You learn how train traffic is controlled and gain insights into modern signal-box technology. You complete theory phases at Erfurt University of Applied Sciences and practical phases in train traffic control and district operations management. After two years, you complete the apprenticeship and gain practical experience at a signal box in the Dresden network. During the rest of the degree, you deepen your knowledge of railway engineering and business and learn about infrastructure planning, transport economics, and transport policy.

You have already completed or will soon complete your Abitur or Fachabitur, or you have an equivalent professional qualification. You are interested in railway operations and economic and technical connections, are good at mathematics and physics, stay calm in difficult situations, and work in a focused way. You have good communication skills, are mobile, and are willing to work shifts and, after the apprenticeship, on weekends and public holidays.

To help you succeed in your apprenticeship, you receive a notebook for learning and private use. If you rent a home closer to the training location because your daily commute would otherwise exceed 2.5 hours, you can receive a rent subsidy of up to €400 per month. After successfully completing the program, you receive an offer of permanent employment with DB.
