Your Dual Study Program You complete the dual study program Computer Science with a focus on Software Engineering (Bachelor of Science), combined with the apprenticeship as a specialist in application development. In the Dortmund System House, you develop applications that make the daily work of the City of Dortmund more digital and simpler. During your practical training, you create current and diverse software solutions tailored exactly to the wishes and needs of the customers. You work closely with the individual departments of the City of Dortmund, understand their requirements, and implement them step by step into suitable digital applications. In this way, you help make the administration more modern, efficient, and user-friendly.

These are your tasks: As a Bachelor of Science, you are a service provider in the Dortmund System House and develop and program modern, complex applications. Customer wishes and needs are the focus. We adapt our services to these. If a requirement cannot be met, we develop an alternative solution. In the area of internet application development, you also develop applications for citizens. The tasks go partly far beyond pure development. You select suitable tools, e.g., databases, different programming languages depending on the purpose, especially in the web environment (Java (EE), JavaScript + JavaScript frameworks). Before a new application is developed, you first check whether the existing application can be adapted to the existing requirements. If this attempt fails, you analyze the concrete tasks the application should fulfill together with the users. As soon as a precise picture of the services of the software to be created emerges, you plan the programming implementation. Not only is value placed on the functionality of the application, but also on its user-friendly operability. Your tasks also include instructing users in the operation of the new applications. This instruction can take place individually or through training sessions that you plan, prepare, and conduct yourself. Additionally, you create a user-friendly manual tailored exactly to the application and remain available for questions and problems. Due to the complexity of the tasks, you work intensively with colleagues from the Dortmund System House and other areas of the city administration. Due to the constant further development of computer technology, you should always be up to date and will therefore frequently attend further training courses. The dual computer science study program with a focus on software engineering (Bachelor of Science) is divided into theoretical and practical sections. The goal of the dual study program is to qualify you twice. The first qualification level is the apprenticeship degree as a specialist in application development. Your semesters completed up to that point prepare you in parallel for the final examination. In addition, supplementary courses and other events are offered to teach you further examination content and prepare you for the intermediate and final examinations at the IHK. The second qualification level is achieved with the degree as a Bachelor of Science. You acquire the practical knowledge of your apprenticeship two days a week in the Dortmund System House.
